This Gift cannot be used as background music. The Jack White-influenced guitar sound and Adele Bethel’s feminine but edgy, rock band worthy vocals demand your full attention. The Scottish band of four—two sons, two daughters (no relation)—gives a high energy performance on every song. “Gilt Complex” opens the CD with a whirlwind of energy that doesn’t let up through the next eleven tracks. By the time the CD is through, you’ll need a nap because it wears you out. For a closer look at the lyrics, which are deeper than you’d think at first listen, check out the band’s MySpace site for acoustic renditions of a few songs. --MLGJoseph Arthur and The Lonely Astronauts
