Expansive synth and electric keyboards blend into a sound that is not exactly minimalistic but definitely uncluttered, even crisp. This debut album by San Franciscan producer Giraffage is steeped in R&B, and with its electric piano tones sometimes sounds quaint. But that retro spirit is tempered by cutting-edge production and a sonic palette that is completely fresh. Overall, the impression is of a uniquely warm take on electronic music for 2017 and a thoroughly lovely album. Just overlook the album cover, which is like something you’d find on a sci-fi novel written by Neil Peart.
Pros: Throwback atmospherics, one-of-a-kind sound.
Cons: Stays about the same tempo throughout.
Primest cuts: Maybes ft. Japanese Breakfast, Falling Softly.
