LANDLADY

Upright Behavior

2014-06-30

Brooklyn five-piece, Landlady has previously self-released two albums, but third release, Upright Behavior is the band's debut for the Hometapes record label. The band is led by singer/writer/multi-instrumentalist Adam Schatz, whose vocals are soulful and sincere. (He plays sax in Man Man, too.) The songs here are often divided into parts as if they are movements from a classical piece, and these parts fit together in interesting ways, giving the music a sophisticated edge.  The band utilizes two drummers and all kinds of unorthodox instruments to create its complex and quirky sound.  All in all, this is elaborate and involved while also being accessible, making for an enjoyable listening experience.   Rebecca Ruth
