The second in the Rough Guide Series focusing on vocal stars of Indian film. According to the 1991 Guinness Book of World Records, Lata had contributed vocals to no fewer than 30,000 individual film tracks, making her the world's most recorded artist.

Lata is the big sister of the Rough Guide's previous focus artist, Asha Bhosle.
