For his second solo release, Dept. of Disappearance, Jason Lytle seems doleful. Perhaps it was the recent Grandaddy reunion shows that did it. He was the lead singer/songwriter, after all. Dept. of Disappearance offers electronic and symphonic elements, overlaying a pop rock base....good, right? It also sports cheesy wind sounds and not so well-produced synths. Add to this the lyrical themes of detachment and isolation combined with Mr. Lytle's whispery tenor vocals and you have something that's both melodic and melancholy. While Dept. of Disappearance is pretty and even interesting at times, it just makes me wish he wasn't such a damn sad-sack. Rebecca Ruth
