Pinetop Seven

The Night's Bloom

2006-05-08

Highly literate indie rock from the mind of Darren Richard, who in the course of eight years and five records, has allowed 23 different musicians to flow in and out of Pinetop Seven. This Chicago-based group mingles a myriad of various instruments into each song, from cello and viola to flugelhorns, banjo,s sleigh bells and marimbas. And as for the poetic lyrics: Irish writer John Connolly has included portions of Pinetop Seen songs in each of his last three novels. The construction of the songs has been described as a “carnival of instrumentation” and the ambiance to a film noir detective story soundtrack – if they still made them in the new millennium. Striking music deserving of listening – and reading. 4/06 MJVD Rock-Esoteric
