Back in the day, Seattle native, Damien Jurado was a lo-fi folk singer. Signed to the Sub Pop label, he dabbled in Christian music for a while (with Pedro the Lion’s David Bazaan). He also had a knack for using found music in his productions. Currently, he is with Secretly Canadian and Maraqopa is his sixth release for the label (his tenth overall), so the guy’s been around for a while. However, with 2010’s release of Saint Bartlett, he hit his stride. This album continues the tradition. LIke Saint Bartlett, Maraqopa was richly produced by label-mate, Richard Swift. Together, they’ve created something beautiful. At times mildly psychedelic and at others lush and melancholy, Maraqopa is absolutely alluring. Rebecca Ruth
