Long live post-punk.Dean Wareham and the crew continue to channel the Velvet Underground on their seventh and final studio album Rendezvous, a collection of delightful and pretty songs, with unabashed alt-country chords. Yes, they’re older, their distortion a little softer, but it’s still Luna, whose very existence arguably birthed Radiohead, the Breeders, the Walkmen, and the list goes on. (One curious note: #2 “Cindy Tastes of Barbecue” really tastes of Cornershop’s “Brimful of Asha,” but I am digressing from my mission…) To my ear, Wareham’s falsetto sounds disarmingly like Neil Young, but I guess I've dropped enough names for one review.
A sad note: Wareham says the band is retiring in 2005. Something about shaking too many hands, too many germs and rock and roll is killing his/their life. Oh yes, he also cites the expanding universe. For more, www.fuzzywuzzy.com
