Silent movies

The 13 tracks on “Silent Movies” by Marc Ribot are best described in the cd’s liner notes as “walking backwards into a silent movie”. The album is comprised entirely of instrumental pontifications on the guitar; six string meditations on the meaning of life. Envisioned as the soundtrack to movies, some real, some imagined, Ribot spent 3 days in the studio laying down tracks that manifested from his fascination with the cinema. The result was a successful compilation of minimalist songs that leave the listener feeling like he is in the midst of his own personal movie. While the album is subtle, even sparse in many places, guitar aficionados will readily appreciate the technique and finesse Ribot exhibits in his playing. Much is accomplished with an economy of notes played.
