The female crooner, violinist, and songwriter Joan Wasser is dreamy and original in ‘Real Life.’ Jeff Buckley band mate and lover, Joan is finally allotted a place of her own on this album. Separated enough from studios and projects where she has been overshadowed by the likes of Lou Reed, Steve Drodz (Flaming Lips), Rufas Wainwright, and Elton John, (to name a few) Joan as Police Woman is an entirely fresh experience. A Blending of jazz, soul, folk, and punk best described as American Soul Music this is a tremendous double release with notables on both discs. Disc One: tracks 2, 5, 9, and 10, a tribute to Eliot Smith. Disc two has a distressing cover of Bowie’s ‘Sweet Thing.’ Oh and hey all you protest kids.
