Guy Clark

Workbench Songs

2006-07-31

With tunes so firmly rooted in aspects of life that both mirror and define place, this CD reminds me of Willie Nelson, John Prine, and Tom Wait in the same skin playing their folkified country best. The emphasis is Texamericana with ample doses of pickin', fiddlin', and mandolin. There is decent range in the offerings and every song would air well. In particular, check out Magdelene (2), Cinco De Mayo in Memphis (8), and Analog Girl (9), although the real sleeper just might be "give me just one more puff of that Worry B Gone" (Was Country Joe in the studio?) If this is as typical Guy Clark as the liner notes claim, well then I'll be rummaging through the library for more. – Michael Burgwin
