(feat. Kane Daly) Curtis Montgomery, better known onstage and behind his sax as King Curtis, performed throughout the 50s and 60s, most notably with worked with Buddy Holly, The Coasters, and leading Aretha Franklin's backing band the Kingpins. On Aug. 13, 1971, King Curtis was bringing an air conditioner up to his apartment on West 86th Street in New York City when his path was impeded by a pair of derelicts doing drugs on the stoop. An argument ensued and one of the men pulled out a knife and stabbed Curtis in the heart. He was dead at age 37.
