Oi Va Voi is a British band that takes its name from a Yiddish-derived exclamation popular in modern Hebrew meaning, approximately "Oh, dear!" It is an experimental band from London, England, which formed in the late 1990s.

Born in California and raised in Hudson, Quebec, Watson attended Lower Canada College. While living in Hudson, Quebec, Watson worked as a pool and hot tub water analyst at Piscines et Spas Hudson, owned by Jacques Chevrier. The two are still close friends to this day. He began his musical career in high school as a member of a ska band called Gangster Politics.

Drake signed to Island Records when he was 20 years old and released his debut album, Five Leaves Left, in 1969. By 1972, he had recorded two more albums—Bryter Layter and Pink Moon. None of the albums sold more than 5,000 copies on their initial release. His reluctance to perform live or be interviewed further contributed to his lack of commercial success. Despite this, he was able to gather a loyal group of fans who would champion his music. One such person was his manager, Joe Boyd, who had a clause put into his own contract with Island Records that ensured Drake's records would never go out of print.
On their first album, Nouvelle Vague, the group resurrected classics from the New Wave music era, and reinterpreted them in a bossa nova style. The various female singers on Nouvelle Vague only performed songs they had never heard before, to ensure that each cover would have a unique quality.
