Lawrence KS is also home to Haskell Indian Nations University. Haskell was formed as the United States Indian Industrial Training School in Lawrence in 1884. Haskell was originally an Indian boarding school for 15 students and provided agricultural education for grades one through five. The emphasis was on assimilation — teaching the students to become members of the dominant society. The school’s name was changed to Haskell Institute in 1887. In the late 1920s Haskell's football team defeated the Michigan Agricultural College, later named MSU.
